Artist Spotlight: LAWTON
You recently made your debut at A State of Trance. How did it feel stepping onto that stage and introducing yourself to the ASOT audience?
It felt like a special moment. The ASOT stage is legendary and has a strong connection with the music and the community around it, so being able to introduce LAWTON there felt meaningful. The crowd energy was incredible and it was the perfect place to present the sound in that environment.
The title “Bad Potato” is unforgettable. Can you tell us the story behind the name? What inspired it, and how did you decide it was the perfect fit for this song?
I was chopping up a vocal sample and it immediately sounded like the sequence was saying “bad potato.” I saved the first render as “bad potato” and the name just stuck. As the track started taking shape, the attitude of the music matched that feeling perfectly. It was simple, distinctive, and it stayed in your head, which made it the right fit.
During that ASOT performance, did you take the opportunity to premiere new music or test unreleased material with the crowd?
Yes, I played a-lot of unreleased material during the set including collaborations with Panteros666, Hurts and Sacha Harland. Those moments are always valuable because you can feel instantly how the crowd reacts. It’s one of the best ways to understand how the music connects on the dance-floor.
