Artist Spotlight: nilsix
Can you tell us more about the making process of “Outta My Head”?
Ø: It started as a melody I made before going on tour in Asia with Mark. I showed it briefly to him, and even after the tour had ended, he had the melody stuck in his head. Then we decided we were gonna work on it on tour in the States, and it went super fast.
M: We made the majority of it on a MacBook on tour in the US last year. Orjan already had a melody idea that I couldn’t get outta my head (sorry for the pun). The first version that we did was a crossover with UKG in the breakdown, really cool, but it felt like 3 different tracks in one. So we changed the breakdown to be more trancey with a nice vocal. I did the final mix and master in my home studio, but just some small tweaks really.
How do you split the creative process when you’re in the studio together? Does one of you lead, or is it genuinely fifty-fifty?
Ø: Oh, it’s always different. Sometimes I have a melody, or he does. Or just a general idea of a structure might sometimes even be enough. We bounce ideas and stems and midis all the time, but for sure, when we’re in the studio together, that’s when the real magic happens. Everything just flows, and we come up with the most random things. For sure, our workload’s around 50-50!
M: It’s different every time. This time, Orjan had an amazing melody to build on, and with our last track ‘Nostalgia’, we worked on a melody idea I made. Sometimes we each work on certain parts of the track separately, but we work the fastest when we’re together in the studio. And I’d say the workload is about 50/50
You’ve both made music for decades. What does nilsix give you that a solo release can’t?
Ø: The best of both worlds, really. Honestly, Mark and I, as solo artists, are quite far apart, but then for some reason, when we’re doing stuff together, something insane just happens. We find a whole new style, a whole different vibe, and a lot of random things are bound to happen in any track we make. It might have something to do with the fact that we’re ALWAYS having fun and making puns and, just in general, have a great time. We’ve said it before, but a good thing can’t be said enough, BROSKIS FOR LIFE!
